Putin Vows Steady Energy Supplies to India in Snub of Washington Sanctions

During a defiant statement to the West, Leader Vladimir Putin has told PM Narendra Modi that Russia stands ready to guarantee “continuous” deliveries of energy resources to India. This declaration came as the two leaders met in Delhi and declared their bilateral ties were “resistant to foreign coercion.”

A Signal Directed at the United States

The statement, delivered Friday, seemed to be a direct challenge at the United States and its allies, that have sought to compel New Delhi into reducing its close links with Moscow. This comes is in response to recent Washington's moves, including the imposition of import duties against Indian goods over its acquisition of Moscow's energy exports.

“Our nation is a dependable source of oil and gas and everything needed for the growth of India’s industry,” the Russian president stated. “Moscow stands willing to persist in securing the steady delivery of resources for the rapidly growing Indian economy.”

The Indian leader, though he did not naming energy directly, reinforced the theme by saying that “a stable energy base has been a robust and important foundation of the India-Russia alliance.”

Challenging Washington's Stance

In the lead-up to the talks, during a media interview, Putin had criticized American pressure over India's energy purchases. The president questioned, “Should America has the right to buy our atomic materials, how can you deny India have the same privilege?”

The visit represented his initial visit to India since the onset of the war in Ukraine, and the two nations undertook a visible attempt to display that the personal rapport between the men remained intact.

A Personal Welcome

In a notable step, Modi personally greeted Putin as he disembarked. Both leaders exchanged a hearty embrace like old friends before holding a closed-door supper on Thursday evening.

The Indian prime minister referred to India's partnership with Russia as “a beacon” and noted it was “built on mutual respect and deep trust.”

Expanding Bilateral Partnerships

The bilateral summit produced several important deals in the fields of military and economic cooperation. A cornerstone agreement was the signing of an economic cooperation programme that runs to 2030, which sets a goal to increase twofold bilateral trade to a hundred billion USD each year by the end of the decade.

The leaders also vowed to recalibrate their defence ties. While Russia continues to be India's biggest exporter of weapons, this role has reduced in recent years as India works to widen its sources.

The official release stressed cooperation in the collaborative manufacturing of cutting-edge defence platforms, although direct details of purchases such as the Sukhoi Su-57 were left out.

Ultimately, both nations restated that in the “current complex, strained, and uncertain geopolitical situation, Russian-Indian ties stay resilient to foreign influence.”
