Manchester United Poised to Secure Germany Striker Lea Schüller from the Bavarian Giants

Manchester United are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific German striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from Bayern Munich.

A Marquee Acquisition for United

Schüller, who has six months remaining on her deal, has been a prolific goal-getter for her club and the national team. Having netted over 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. Her arrival will be seen as a major coup for the Women’s Super League side.

Her exit from Bayern has been anticipated since she was seen holding back emotions while applauding the German club’s supporters following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.

Reports in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was set to lose one of its top strikers. According to multiple sources, all the paperwork for the move are now finalised.

Consistent Goal Threat to Strengthen United's Forward Line

The 28-year-old’s signing is expected to provide a major boost to United’s attacking options. Schüller has been highly consistent in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.

  • Over seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
  • She won the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.

Gathering Steam at Old Trafford

Securing the German international coincides with a period when the club appear to be building momentum.

Their recent on-pitch successes include qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.

In the transfer market, the mid-season window has brought additional business:

  1. The acquisition of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
  2. The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since arriving in 2023.

On Miyazawa’s new deal, a senior figure commented: “Miyazawa is now a critical component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill allows her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”

The new defender, having joined from a side from the NWSL, said: “You can feel how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the top European competition.”
