Leeds Hold The Reds at Bay to Earn Hard-Fought Draw at Anfield
Two undefeated runs continued in place at Anfield, but solely one side could take real contentment from the outcome. Leeds United carried out a perfect strategy of frustrating and restricting Liverpool, with the maiden scoreless draw of Arne Slot's tenure underscoring the lingering issues within the reigning champions' latest recovery.
Defensive Display Secures Vital Result
A lacklustre goalless stalemate, the first in 84 fixtures for Slot's team, was largely attributable to the immense solidity of the outstanding defensive duo Struijk and Bijol, combined with the home side's failure to unlock a well-drilled Leeds unit. Liverpool were reduced to speculative half-chances, and a smattering of discontent echoed around the stadium at the full-time signal on a laboured display.
"If I don't utilise the whole squad and we have a schedule like this, I would not do this," Daniel Farke explained. "With a footballer like Dominic I have to look after him. We all are aware his recent couple of years was difficult. He is in incredible form but it's vital I look after him and sometimes the head needs to prevail over the heart."
The Hosts' Struggle in the Final Third
Arne Slot's team initially showed more zip and sharpness than in previous matches, with the right wing-back prominent on the right side. Nevertheless, clear-cut chances were scarce. The home side's primary moments in the first period involved striker Hugo Ekitiké.
- Following a neat one-two with Curtis Jones, the France international cut inside and forced a save from keeper Lucas Perri at his near post.
- The visitors' shot-stopper could not hold the shot, requiring a crucial intervention from James Justin to prevent Florian Wirtz tapping in the loose ball.
- Ekitiké later sprinted through onto a long ball but was held by Jaka Bijol; although staying on his feet, his appeals for a spot-kick were dismissed.
Spurned Opportunities Are Pivotal
Ekitiké's afternoon was compounded when he did not manage to hit the net with his clearest opening. Connecting with a swift Frimpong delivery in the six-yard box, the striker miscued a glance that struck the Perri while with an open goal.
At the other end, their clearest opportunity came from an Alisson error. The experienced keeper sent a wayward clearance straight to midfielder Ethan Ampadu, whose first-time effort returned down the centre was gathered by the alert goalkeeper.
Scrappy Final Stages
The contest descended into a scrappy encounter, low on quality. The midfielder, returning from a ban, forced a save from Perri from distance. The subsequent scramble resulted in Ampadu controlling the ball, awarding the hosts a free-kick in a dangerous position, which Wirtz sent into the defence.
The Liverpool manager introduced a three change to inject impetus, and moments later Virgil van Dijk went agonisingly close to heading his team in ahead from a corner, his effort flying just wide the post.
Late introduction Dominic Calvert-Lewin believed he had continued his scoring streak for Leeds in the closing minutes, but his finish was ruled out for a marginal offside call. Ultimately, the two sides had to settle for a share of the points.
