EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says
The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals working on fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were central to campaigns to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.
