Many in Cameroon express anger over the fact that the president has won an eighth term

The nation's Interior Minister the interior minister has stated that political opponent Tchiroma Bakary will undergo legal proceedings over claims that he provoked "aggressive electoral rallies".

No fewer than 4 protesters have been lost their lives during confrontations between law enforcement and opposition supporters since Cameroon's election on 12 October, with 92-year-old President Paul Biya obtaining an eighth presidential mandate.

Issa Tchiroma asserts that he won the election, a statement rejected by the governing party, the CPDM.

Violent crackdowns by law enforcement on demonstrators have alarmed the world leaders, with the UN, AU and EU demanding moderation.

Official's Accusations

On Tuesday, Nji accused the opposition figure of coordinating what he labeled "illegal" demonstrations resulting in the fatalities, and also condemned him for announcing success in the electoral contest.

He noted that the opposition leader's "associates involved in an subversive plot" will also be prosecuted.

Poll Figures

Paul Biya, who took control in 1982 and is now the oldest serving president, secured the October 12 election with a majority of the votes, compared to just over a third for his opponent, according to Cameroon's Constitutional Council.

Challenger's Position

Tchiroma Bakary is remains silent to the government's decision to try him, but he had previously announced that he would not accept a fraudulent outcome - and that he was not afraid of being arrested.

On election result day, he reported that armed men used lethal force on demonstrators gathered near his home in the city of Garoua, killing at least two civilians.

Investigation Announced

Recently, the government official announced that an probe would be started into violent incidents prior to and following the publication of the vote outcome.

"During these attacks, some of the perpetrators lost their lives," he said, without offering a specific number of demonstrators who have been fatally injured in the incidents.

The minister noted that multiple personnel of the security forces also sustained significant wounds.

Ongoing Circumstances

Even though the interior minister maintained the condition nationwide was now manageable, demonstrators remain active in certain regions of the country, especially in urban centers, where protesters established roadblocks on that day, and ignited tires on the thoroughfares.

Analysts caution that the election-related unrest could plunge the nation into a leadership vacuum.
