Adult Swim's Premier Fresh Series of This Year Earns a Significant Renewal for Seasons 2 and 3.

In October of last year, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. But, not long after, the channel unveiled a completely new animated series with a strikingly different tone. Haha, You Clowns was sweet and soothing, evoking a animated take of a serene talk show. In an era often defined by cynicism, this show's sincerity resonated deeply and propelled it a breakout hit.

A Major Commitment

On December 18th, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two additional seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to expand upon the world of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four key characters.

"I’m so grateful to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and helped it grow," said Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for seasons to come."

Network Praise

Accompanying the news praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He thanked the fans who discovered the show and supported its peculiarly charming style.

"All of you showed up for this new show, praised it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Comforting Counterpoint

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. There’s something surprisingly comfy about following this lovable family navigate their everyday routines.

Previously, creator Joe Cappa stated his goal to move the comedy genre beyond its current cynical streak. He attributed this trend to various cultural shifts.

“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” explained Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we must laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”

The Path Forward

With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa may well catalyze that very evolution. If nothing else, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to experience the warm glow of the endearing Campbell clan.

The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. All episodes is ready to watch on HBO Max.
